Czech Cheese Potato Balls
The Geedel Vegetable Chopper ensures lump-free potato mash and leak-proof cheese filling, while keeping prep tidy. Using common supermarket ingredients, it recreates Prague's cozy street food vibe—no special skills needed for these authentic snacks.
Ingredients
- 2 potatoes (about 300g, peeled)
- 60g cheddar cheese (cut into small cubes)
- 50g breadcrumbs
- 1 egg (beaten)
- ¼ tsp salt
- A pinch of black pepper
- 3 tbsp olive oil (for pan-frying)
- 10g chopped pickles/gherkins (optional, for serving)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Potatoes: Smooth Mash, No Lumps
Wash and cut the potatoes into 2cm cubes. Boil in cold water for about 15 minutes, or until completely tender. Drain thoroughly, then transfer to the manual food chopper for potatoes. Press gently 3 times to create a smooth, lump-free mash.
While still hot, mix in the salt and black pepper. Let the mixture cool slightly until warm to the touch (this makes it easier to shape and fill).
2. Shape & Coat: Foolproof for Beginners
Take about 30g of the potato mash and roll it into a ball. Make an indentation, place a cube of cheese (about 5g) inside, and seal the potato around it completely.
Dip the sealed ball first into the beaten egg, then roll it in breadcrumbs until fully coated. (Using a food chopper with container for the breadcrumbs minimizes mess).
Repeat with the remaining mixture. Let the coated balls rest for 5 minutes to help the breadcrumbs adhere.
3. Pan-Fry & Serve: Crispy Outside, Gooey Inside
Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat until it shimmers (test by adding a breadcrumb – it should sizzle gently).
Add the potato balls and pan-fry, turning them 2-3 times, for about 6 minutes until golden brown and crisp on all sides.
Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm, optionally with chopped pickles on the side. The crispy exterior gives way to a soft, fluffy potato interior with a delicious, molten cheese core—comforting and utterly moreish.
Conclusion
On a crisp Prague afternoon, the Geedel Potato Chopper creates golden potato balls with stretchy cheddar centers in 25 minutes—no tiring hand mashing needed. Perfect for turning simple ingredients into distinctive snacks that satisfy any home cook.
