Green Bean Casserole

Traditional green bean casserole is a classic Thanksgiving side. This year, level it up: add mushroom dice and onion strips chopped with the Geedel Vegetable Chopper, then top with homemade crispy onion strings for an elevated taste and texture. Ingredients:

- 500g fresh green beans

- 200g white mushrooms

- ½ yellow onion

- 1 can (approx. 295g) cream of mushroom soup

- 50ml milk (for adjusting thickness)

- 1 cup fried onion strings

- 2 tablespoons butter

- Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prep the Green Beans

Wash the green beans, trim the ends, and remove any tough strings. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and blanch for 3 minutes. Immediately transfer the green beans to ice water to stop cooking and preserve their bright green color. Drain and set aside.

Chop the Mushrooms (Dice)

Rinse the mushrooms quickly and pat dry with paper towels. Attach the dicing blade to the Geedel Manual Vegetable Chopper. Hold one mushroom chunk against the blade and press the handle gently. Uniform mushroom dice will fall into the container below. Repeat until all mushrooms are diced. 

Prep the Onion (Shred)

Peel the onion, trim the ends, and cut it in half. Swap the blade for the thick shredding blade. Hold half the onion with the cut side against the blade and slide it back and forth steadily to shred into thin strips.

Sauté the Filling

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add half the onion strips and all the mushroom dice. Stir to combine. Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper. Sauté over medium heat for 8-10 minutes until the mushroom liquid has mostly evaporated and the edges of the mushrooms are golden brown. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

Assemble the Casserole

In a medium bowl, mix the canned cream of mushroom soup with milk until smooth. Lightly grease a 9x9-inch (or similar size) casserole dish with butter. Add the blanched and drained green beans, sautéed mushroom-onion mixture to the dish, and spread evenly. Pour the thinned cream of mushroom soup over the green beans and mushrooms. Gently stir all ingredients with a spatula or spoon to ensure they’re roughly coated with the sauce. Add the Topping Sprinkle the fried onion strings evenly over the entire surface of the casserole, covering it completely.

Bake Preheat the oven to 175°C.

Place the casserole dish inside. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until the sauce bubbles around the edges and the top onion strings are golden and crispy. If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover with a piece of aluminum foil.
